Nidhiṁ nidheti puriso, gambhīre odakantike; Atthe kicce samuppanne, atthāya me bhavissati. Esa devamanussānaṁ, sabbakāmadado nidhi;
A person stores away their savings in a deep trove by the water’s edge: “When need arises it will be there to help Such savings grant every desire of gods and humans too.
人はその財宝を、水辺の深き蔵に納める。
「事ある折には、それがわが助けとなろう」と。
かかる財宝は、神々と人間のあらゆる願いを叶えるものなり。

Paṭisambhidā vimokkhā ca, yā ca sāvakapāramī; Paccekabodhi buddhabhūmi, sabbametena labbhati. Evaṁ mahatthikā esā, yadidaṁ puññasampadā;
Analytical knowledge, the liberations, the perfections of the disciple, the plane of an independent Buddha: through this they have it all. This accomplishment in merit is so very beneficial.
分析的智慧（パティサンビダー）と解脱（ヴィモッカ）、また声聞（サーヴァカ）の諸波羅蜜（パーラミー）、独覚（パッチェカブッダ）の境地、そして仏陀の境地——これらすべてが、この功徳によって得られるのである。かくのごとく、この功徳の成就（プンニャサンパダー）は、いかに大いなる利益をもたらすことか。

Tasmā dhīrā pasaṁsanti, paṇḍitā katapuññatanti. Rājato vā duruttassa, corato pīḷitassa vā; Iṇassa vā pamokkhāya, dubbhikkhe āpadāsu vā;
That’s why the attentive and the astute praise the making of merit. free me from rulers if I am slandered, or from bandits if harassed, or to release me from debt, or in case of famine or losses.”
それゆえ、思慮深き者（dhīrā）と智慧ある者（paṇḍitā）は、功徳（puñña）を積むことを称讃するのである。――悪しき為政者に讒言されたるときも、盗賊に苦しめられたるときも、あるいは負債より解き放たれんとするときも、飢饉や災厄（āpadā）に遭いたるときも、〔功徳はわれを〕救い護るであろう、と。

Etadatthāya lokasmiṁ, nidhi nāma nidhīyati. Tāvassunihito santo, gambhīre odakantike; Na sabbo sabbadā eva, tassa taṁ upakappati.
What the world calls savings get stored away for such reasons. But no matter how well stored away they are in a deep pit by the water’s edge, all their savings will fail to aid them all the time.
世の人々がかくのごとき目的のために、財宝（nidhī）を蓄えるのである。されど、いかに深く水辺の地中に埋め隠したとしても、その財宝はつねにかれを助けるとは限らない。

Nidhi vā ṭhānā cavati, saññā vāssa vimuyhati; Nāgā vā apanāmenti, yakkhā vāpi haranti naṁ. Appiyā vāpi dāyādā, uddharanti apassato;
For perhaps those savings shift from there, or they forget what marks the site, or dragons make off with them, or spirits carry them away, or unloved heirs secretly unearth them.
あるいはその財宝は埋めた場所から移ってしまうこともあり、あるいはその場所を示す印を忘れてしまうこともある。また龍（ナーガ）がそれを運び去ることもあれば、夜叉（ヤッカ）がそれを奪い去ることもある。はたまた疎ましく思う相続人が、持ち主の知らぬ間にひそかに掘り出してしまうこともある。

etaṁ ādāya gacchati. Asādhāraṇamaññesaṁ, acorāharaṇo nidhi; Kayirātha dhīro puññāni, yo nidhi anugāmiko.
only this you take when you go. You don’t have to share it with others, no thief makes off with your savings. An attentive one would make merit, the savings that stay with you.
ただこれのみを、汝は逝くとき携えてゆく。
他の者と分かち合う必要もなく、
盗人がその蓄えを奪い去ることもない。
賢明なる者（dhīro）は功徳（puññā）を積むがよい——
それこそが、いつまでも汝に寄り添う財宝（nidhi）なのだから。

Karaṇīyamatthakusalena, Yanta santaṁ padaṁ abhisamecca; Sakko ujū ca suhujū ca, Sūvaco cassa mudu anatimānī. Diṭṭhiñca anupaggamma, Sīlavā dassanena sampanno;
Those who are skilled in the meaning of scripture should practice like this so as to realize the state of peace. Let them be capable and upright, very upright, easy to speak to, gentle and humble; Avoiding harmful views, virtuous, accomplished in insight,
経典の意義に通じた者は、
かくのごとく実践すべし——
寂静（ニッバーナ）の境地を証得せんがために。
よく能くあれ、誠実であれ、
きわめて誠実であれ。
言葉を素直に受け入れ、
柔和にして、驕りなき者であれ。
邪見（ミッチャーディッティ）を取ることなく、
戒（シーラ）を保ち、
正見（ダッサナ）において円熟し——

Dīghā vā ye va mahantā, Majjhimā rassakā aṇukathūlā. Diṭṭhā vā ye va adiṭṭhā, Ye va dūre vasanti avidūre; Bhūtā va sambhavesī va, Sabbasattā bhavantu sukhitattā.
frail or firm, long or large, medium, small, tiny or round, seen or unseen, living far or near, those who have been born <j>and those about to be born— may all beings be happy!
弱きものも、強きものも、長きものも、大いなるものも、中くらいのものも、短きものも、微細なるものも、粗大なるものも、目に見えるものも、目に見えぬものも、遠くに住むものも、近くに住むものも、すでに生まれたるものも、これから生まれようとするものも――すべての生きとし生けるもの（サッバ・サッタ）よ、幸せであれ。
