“Mendicants, a fine royal thoroughbred with four factors is worthy of a king, fit to serve a king, and reckoned a factor of kingship. What four? Integrity, speed, patience, and gentleness. A fine royal thoroughbred with these four factors is worthy of a king. … In the same way, a mendicant with four qualities is worthy of offerings dedicated to the gods, worthy of hospitality, worthy of a religious donation, worthy of veneration with joined palms, and is the supreme field of merit for the world.
「比丘たちよ、四つの徳を備えた優れた王の駿馬は、王にふさわしく、王に仕えるに値し、王権の一要素とみなされる。その四つとは何か。誠実さ、速さ、忍耐、そして柔順さである。これら四つの徳を具えた優れた王の駿馬は、王にふさわしいのである。……同じように、四つの功徳を備えた比丘は、天神に捧げられる供養を受けるにふさわしく、布施を受けるにふさわしく、浄財の寄進を受けるにふさわしく、合掌して礼拝されるにふさわしく、そして世間における無上の福田となるのである。」
