investigation of principles, energy, rapture, tranquility, immersion, and equanimity, which rely on seclusion, fading away, and cessation, and ripen as letting go. This is called the effort to develop. And what is the effort to preserve? Now at that time a new town hall named Ubbhaṭaka had recently been constructed for the Mallas of Pāvā. 法の探求（ダンマヴィチャヤ）、精進（ヴィーリヤ）、喜悦（ピーティ）、軽安（パッサッディ）、定（サマーディ）、捨（ウペッカー）という覚支（ボッジャンガ）を修習する。それは独処（ヴィヴェーカ）に依り、離欲（ヴィラーガ）に依り、滅（ニローダ）に依り、放捨（ヴォッサッガ）へと熟するものである。友よ、これを修習の勤（パダーナ）と呼ぶ。
友よ、では護持の勤（アヌラッカナー・パダーナ）とは何であるか。そのころ、パーヴァーのマッラ族のために、ウッバタカと名づける新しい集会堂が、ほど近く建てられたばかりであった。いまだ沙門（サマナ）も婆羅門（バラモン）も、いかなる人も、そこに住んだことがなかった。パーヴァーのマッラ族もまた、世尊がチュンダの〔園に〕到着されてとどまっておられるとの報を聞き……
