This is called the effort to restrain. And what is the effort to give up? It’s when a mendicant doesn’t tolerate a sensual, malicious, or cruel thought that’s arisen, but gives it up, gets rid of it, eliminates it, and obliterates it. これを律儀精進（サンヴァラ・パダーナ）と呼ぶ。
では、断断精進（パハーナ・パダーナ）とは何か。比丘たちよ、ここに一人の比丘がいる。その比丘は、すでに生じた欲の思い（カーマヴィタッカ）を受け入れず、これを捨て、払い除け、滅し、消滅へと導く。すでに生じた瞋恚の思い（ブヤーパーダヴィタッカ）を……また、すでに生じた害意の思い（ヴィヒンサーヴィタッカ）を……さらに、生じ来たる一切の悪しき不善なる諸法（アクサラ・ダンマ）を受け入れず、これを捨て、払い除け、滅し、消滅へと導く。これを断断精進（パハーナ・パダーナ）と呼ぶ。
これらを四正勤（チャッターロ・サンマッパダーナ）という。
