北方には友人・知己、下方には下僕・労働者、上方には沙門（さもん）・婆羅門（ばらもん）。
戒（かい）を具えた賢者たる在家者（ざいけしゃ）は、家に生きる者として、よくこれらの方位を敬うべきである。
このように説かれると、長者の子シンガーラカは世尊に向かってこう申し上げた。
「尊とし、世尊よ、まことに尊とうございます。世尊よ、それはちょうど、倒れたものを起こし、覆われたものを開き、道に迷える者に道を示し、あるいは暗闇の中に油の灯（ともしび）を掲げて『眼ある者は形あるものを見るであろう』と示すようなものでございます。このように世尊は、さまざまな方便（ほうべん）をもって法（ダンマ）を明らかにしてくださいました。
