1.16. The Four Absorptions The Buddha has achieved what should be achieved by a faithful gentleman by being energetic and strong, by human strength, energy, vigor, and exertion. ‘Reverend Sāriputta, is there any other ascetic or brahmin—whether past or future—whose direct knowledge is equal to the Buddha when it comes to awakening?’ I would tell them ‘Yes.’ But if they were to ask: ‘Reverend Sāriputta, is there any other ascetic or brahmin at present whose direct knowledge is equal to the Buddha
1.16. 師の功徳を異なる観点から見ること
世尊よ、信ある善家の子が、精進を発し、力強く、人としての力・活力・勇猛・忍耐をもって到達すべきところ、それを世尊はすでに成就されました。
「サーリプッタ尊者よ、過去の世において、他に沙門あるいはバラモンで、正覚（サンボーディ）においての直智（サマーボーディ）が世尊と等しき者がありましたか」と問われるならば、私は「然り」と答えるでしょう。
また「サーリプッタ尊者よ、未来の世において、他に沙門あるいはバラモンで、正覚においての直智が世尊と等しき者があるでしょうか」と問われるならば、私はやはり「然り」と答えるでしょう。
しかし「サーリプッタ尊者よ、現在において、他に沙門あるいはバラモンで、正覚においての直智が世尊と等しき者がありますか」と問われるならば、私は「否」と答えるでしょう。
