It’s when some ascetic or brahmin—by dint of keen, resolute, committed, and diligent effort, and right application of mind—experiences an immersion of the heart of such a kind that they recollect their many kinds of past lives. That is: one, two, three, four, five, ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty, a hundred, a thousand, a hundred thousand rebirths; many eons of the world contracting, many eons of the world expanding, many eons of the world contracting and expanding. ここに、ある沙門（しゃもん）あるいは婆羅門（ばらもん）が、鋭く、堅固にして、専心たゆまぬ努力と、正しき心の集中（マナシカーラ）とによって、かくのごとき心の三昧（チェートサマーディ）に達する。その三昧に住する心において、かれはあまたの過去世（プッベニワーサ）を憶念（おくねん）する。
すなわち、一生、二生、三生、四生、五生、十生、二十生、三十生、四十生、五十生、百生、千生、十万生、また幾多の世界が収縮する劫（サンワッタカッパ）、幾多の世界が展開する劫（ウィワッタカッパ）、幾多の世界が収縮し展開する劫を、つぶさに憶念するのである。
かれはかく想念する。「かの世において、われはかくの名を持ち、かくの姓族に属し、かくの容色を有し、かくの食を摂り、かくの楽苦を受け……」と。
