「さらば、サーリプッタよ、そなたはなぜかくも雄大にして大胆なる言葉を述べ、断固たる決定的な獅子吼（しし-く）を発したのか」
かつて世尊はナーランダーのパーヴァーリカの菴羅（あんら）園に滞在しておられた。そのとき、尊者サーリプッタは世尊のもとへと近づき、世尊を礼拝して、かたわらに座した。かたわらに座した尊者サーリプッタは、世尊にこのように申し上げた。
「尊師よ、わたくしは世尊に対してかくのごとき清浄なる信（しん）を抱いております。すなわち、正覚（さとり）に関する直接智（じきせつち）において、世尊よりも優れた沙門（さもん）あるいは婆羅門（ばらもん）は、過去にも存在せず、未来にも存在せず、また現在にも存在しないと、わたくしは信じております」
