さて、そのころ、尊者ガヴァンパティは、しばしばかのシリーサ宮殿——人の絶えた空虚な宮殿——に昼の休息（日中定）のため赴くのを常としていた。
〔ガヴァンパティは問うた。〕
「道友よ、汝の布施（ダーナ）の事をとりしきっていたウッタラという名の若者は、いずこに生まれ変わったのか。」
〔パーヤーシはこたえた。〕
「尊者よ、わが布施をとりしきっていたウッタラという名の若者は、布施を恭しく（さっかっじゃ）捧げ、己が手ずから（サハッター）捧げ、心を込めて（チッティカタ）捧げ、粗末なものを与えることなく捧げました。かれは身（カーヤ）滅して後、死を超えて、善き境涯（スガティ）なる天界に生まれ、三十三天（ターヴァティンサ）の神々の仲間に加わりました。
しかし尊者よ、わたくしは布施を恭しくなく捧げ、みずからの手によらず捧げ、心もこもらず捧げ、粗末なものを与えて捧げました。このゆえに……〔以下続く〕
