たとえば、ある農夫が種と鋤を携えて森に入ったとしよう。
――第五章 弟子ウッタラの事蹟――
さて、パーヤーシ族長は、沙門・婆羅門（バラモン）、貧者、流浪の者、商人、乞食たちへの布施（ダーナ）を設けた。
「ウッタラよ、そなたは真に、布施をほどこした後にかかる言葉を述べたと聞くが、それは事実か」
「さようでございます、尊者よ」
「しかしウッタラよ、なにゆえにそなたは、布施をした後にそのような言葉を述べたのか。われわれは功徳（プンニャ）を求める者として、布施の果報を期待してこそ施しをなすのではないか」
「尊者の布施の席においては、糠粥に古い漬け汁を添えたような粗末な食物が施されておりました。それは尊者ご自身でさえ、足の先で触れることすら望まれないようなものであります。まして口にするなど、いかでかできましょう」
