I served them with food and drink, and clasped their feet in my own home. Where on earth were these good fellows at when they learned the Buddha’s teachings? For each must know for themselves the teaching
「ゴーパカという天子、ゴーパカという天子よ」と。
「わたしはかつて、眼ある方（仏陀）の優婆夷（うばい）として、ガンダルバの衆に宿りながら、あの境地に住んでいた。かれらはゴータマの弟子たちであった――わたしがまだ人間であった頃に。わたしは食物と飲み物をもってかれらに給仕し、わが家にてその足を合掌して礼拝したのであった。さてこの方々は、いったいどこの方面において、仏陀の法（ダンマ）を受けとられたのであろうか。そもそも法（ダンマ）とは、各人が自らにおいて証知すべきものであるから――」
