カピラヴァットゥ（Kapilavatthu）に住むサキャ族の人々もまた、この知らせを耳にした。人々がそのように申し述べると、クシナーラー（Kusinārā）のマッラ族は、集いたる諸族に向かってこう告げた。「眼ある者（仏陀）を信仰する人々は世に多い。どうか記念塔（ストゥーパ）が各地の方々に広まるようにいたしましょう。」
「しからば、バラモンよ、そなた自らが世尊の遺骨（舎利）を八等分に公平に分けてください。」
「かしこまりました、皆様」と、ドーナ（Doṇa）バラモンは集いたる諸族の言葉を受け入れ、世尊の遺骨を八等分に公平に分けた後、諸族に向かってこう申し述べた。「皆様、どうかこの壺（tumba）を私にお与えください。私もまたこの壺のために塔を建て、供養の儀式を執り行いたいと存じます。」
そこで人々は、ドーナ・バラモンに壺を与えた。
