サーラ樹より滴り落ちる水によって、またコーサラの人々の芳しき香水によって、世尊の荼毘の火は鎮められた。
マガダ国の王アジャータサットゥ（阿闍世）、ヴェーデーヒーの姫の御子は、「世尊はクシナーラーにおいて般涅槃（パリニッバーナ）に入られた」と聞かれた。
そのときカピラヴァットゥに住むサーキャ（釈迦）族は、クシナーラーのマッラ族のもとへ使者を遣わして申し入れた。
「世尊は我らが一族のなかでも最も尊き御方にあらせられます。我らもまた世尊の御舎利（サリーラ）の分与を受けるに値します。我らも世尊の御舎利のために塔（ストゥーパ）を建立し、盛大なる供養の法要を執り行いたく存じます」と。
アラカッパのブリ族もまた、「世尊はクシナーラーにおいて般涅槃に入られた」と伝え聞いた。
