Then—taking those fragrances and garlands, all the musical instruments, and five hundred pairs of garments—they went to the Mallian sal grove at Upavattana and approached the Buddha’s corpse. そのとき、クシナーラーのマッラ族の人々は、香料や花鬘のすべてと、あらゆる楽器類と、五百対の衣を携えて、ウパヴァッタナにあるマッラ族のサーラ樹林へと赴き、世尊の御遺体のもとに近づいた。そして、舞踊と歌謡と奏楽と、花鬘と香料とをもって世尊の御遺体を尊び、敬い、崇め、供養しながら、天蓋を張り巡らし、円形の集会所を整えて、一日を過ごした。
やがてクシナーラーのマッラ族の人々に、こういう思いが起こった。
「今日、世尊の御遺体を荼毘（だび）に付すには、すでに時刻が遅すぎる。明日こそ、われらは世尊の御遺体を荼毘に付し奉ろう」と。
