“Sir, who wouldn’t be extremely happy after hearing the Buddha’s teaching? For I too am extremely happy after hearing the Buddha’s teaching! Excellent, sir! Excellent! As if he were righting the overturned, or revealing the hidden, or pointing out the path to the lost, or lighting a lamp in the dark so people with clear eyes can see what’s there, so too the Buddha has made the teaching clear in many ways. 「尊き師よ、いったい誰が、世尊の説かれた法（ダンマ）を聞いて、心から喜ばずにいられましょうか。このわたくしもまた、世尊の法を拝聴し、この上なく喜びに満たされております。まことに素晴らしい、尊き師よ、まことに素晴らしい。たとえば、倒れたものを起こし、覆われたものを開き、迷える者に道を示し、あるいは『眼ある者は形あるものを見よ』とて、暗闇の中に油の燈火を掲げるがごとく——世尊はさまざまな方便によって、この法を明らかに説き示してくださいました。わたくしはここに、世尊を帰依処（さらな）とし、法（ダンマ）を帰依処とし、比丘僧伽（サンガ）を帰依処として参ります。」
