このようにして、比丘（びく）は戒（かい）を具足するのである。……かれは初禅（しょぜん）に入って住する。……この祭祀は、先の祭祀よりも手間と準備が少なく、しかも果報（かほう）は大きく、功徳（くどく）もまた大である。……かれは第二禅（だいにぜん）に入って住する。……第三禅（だいさんぜん）に入って住する。……
六 クータダンタ、優婆塞（うばそく）となることを告白す
このように説かれると、クータダンタ婆羅門（ばらもん）は世尊にこのように申し上げた。
「ゴータマ様、じつに素晴らしうございます。ゴータマ様、じつに素晴らしうございます。たとえば、倒れたものを起こし、覆われたものを開き、迷える者に道を示し、暗闇の中に燈火（ともしび）を掲げて、目ある者が諸々の形を見ることができるようにするがごとく——」
