‘The self and the cosmos are eternal, barren, steady as a mountain peak, standing firm like a pillar. They remain the same for all eternity, while these sentient beings wander and transmigrate and pass away and rearise. Why is that? Because by dint of keen, resolute, committed, and diligent effort, and right application of mind I experience an immersion of the heart of such a kind that I recollect my many kinds of past lives, with features and details. 「自己（アッター）と世界（ローカ）は常住（サッサタ）にして、不毛にして、山の頂のごとく堅固に、柱のごとく揺るぎなく立っている。そしてこの常住なるものと等しくあり続けながら、諸々の有情（サッタ）は流転し、輪廻し、死没し、再生する。それはなぜか。わたしは、熱誠（アーダッパ）をもって、精励（パダーナ）をもって、専修（アヌヨーガ）をもって、不放逸（アッパマーダ）をもって、正しく意に作為すること（サンマーマナシカーラ）をもって、かくのごとき心の三昧（チェートサマーディ）に達する。その心が三昧に入るとき、わたしは無数の種々なる前世の住処（プッベニヴァーサ）を、その様相と細部とともに憶念する。すなわち、十の成劫・壊劫（サンヴァッタヴィヴァッタ）をも、二十の成劫・壊劫をも、三十の成劫・壊劫をも、四十の成劫・壊劫をも。『かの処にてわれはかかる名を持ち、かかる姓族に生まれ、かかる容色を具えていた』と——」
