中部経典（MN142 §5.7–7.14）
One gives a gift to a perfected one. This is the third religious donation to an individual. One gives a gift to someone practicing to realize the fruit of perfection. Now, Ānanda, gifts to the following persons may be expected to yield the following returns. To an animal, a hundred times. To an unethical ordinary person, a thousand. 如来の弟子にして阿羅漢（arahant）たる者に施しを与える——これが第三の個人に対する供養（dakkhiṇā）である。阿羅漢果（arahattaphala）の現証に向けて修行している者に施しを与える——
アーナンダよ、次に挙げる者たちへの施しは、それぞれ次のような果報をもたらすと期待されるであろう。
畜生（tiracchānagata）に施しを与えれば、百倍の果報が期待される。戒を破った凡夫（puthujjana）に施しを与えれば、千倍の果報が期待される。戒を守る凡夫に施しを与えれば、十万倍の果報が期待される。欲楽（kāma）を離れた外道（bāhiraka）の修行者に施しを与えれば、百億倍の果報が期待される。
しかるに、預流果（sotāpattiphala）の現証に向けて修行している者に施しを与えれば、その果報は数量を超えて無量（appameyya）であり、いかなる計算によっても測り知ることができないのである。
