“Now I’m even more delighted and satisfied with the worthy Udena, since he encourages me to give to the Saṅgha. So with this allowance and another one I will have an assembly hall built for the Saṅgha at Pāṭaliputta.” And so he had that hall built. 「これによって、私はウデーナ尊者に対してさらに深い喜びと満足を覚えます。尊者が私をサンガ（僧伽）への布施へと励ましてくださるからです。それゆえ、この常施（じょうせ）ともう一つの常施をもって、私はパータリプッタにサンガの集会堂を建立いたしましょう。」
こうして、ゴータムカ婆羅門（ブラーフマナ）は、その常施ともう一つの常施をもって、パータリプッタにサンガのための集会堂を建立した。
それより後、ゴータムカ婆羅門はある低い座を取り、かたわらに座した。かたわらに座して、ゴータムカ婆羅門は尊者ウデーナに向かってこう申し上げた。
「わが沙門（サマナ）よ、道理にかなった出家の生活などというものは存在しない――これが私の考えるところであります。しかしながら、尊者のごとき尊い方々を、また、それに関わる教えを、私はいまだ見たことがありませんでした。」
「婆羅門よ、では、そのことについて論じようではありませんか――」
