一方、別の者がイチジク（優曇羅）の乾いた木を用いて火を起こし、炎を生じさせたとしましょう。大王よ、どのようにお思いになりますか。これらの異なる種類の木から生じた火には、炎と炎との間に、色と色との間に、あるいは光輝と光輝との間に、何らかの差異があるでしょうか」
「いいえ、尊師よ、そのようなことはございません」
「大王よ、まさにそのように、精励（パダーナ）によって生み出され、努力によって起こされたこの火においては、ある者の解脱（ヴィムッティ）と別の者の解脱との間に、いかなる差異もないと、わたしは申すのです」
「尊師よ、世には四つの階層（ヴァンナ）があります——刹帝利（クシャトリヤ）、婆羅門（バラモン）、毘舎（ヴェッサ）、首陀（スッダ）がそれであります。もし彼らがこれら五つの精励（パダーニヤ）の徳目を備えておったならば——」
