私には、罪ある者を処刑し、あるいは罰金を科し、あるいは追放する権限がございます。それでも、裁判の席に着いておりますと、臣下どもは絶えず私の言葉を遮ります。「裁判の最中に口を挟まず、私が話し終わるまで待て」と申しても、到底言うことを聞きません。
ところが、尊師よ、ここにおきましては、世尊が数百人の会衆に法（ダンマ）をお説きになるとき、そのお弟子たちの中から咳の音ひとつ、咽払いの声ひとつ聞こえてまいりません。かつて、尊師よ、世尊が数百人の会衆にお説きになったおり、また私は、巧みで思慮深い、ある聡明な刹帝利（クシャトリヤ）たちを見てまいりましたが……
