But, sir, I know that these things are not suitable for you. “Sir, we have both seen this river Aciravatī when it has rained heavily in the mountains, and the river overflows both its banks. In the same way, Venerable Ānanda can make a set of three robes for himself from this imported cloak, and you can share your old robes with your fellow monks. 「しかし、尊者よ、私どももまた知っております。『これは尊者アーナンダにはふさわしくない』と。尊者よ、このアチラヴァティー河は、尊者アーナンダと私どもの両者がすでに目にしておるところでございます。上流の山々に大雨（おおあめ）が降り注いだとき、このアチラヴァティー河は両岸にあふれ出て流れまいります。それと同じように、尊者よ、尊者アーナンダはこの舶来の布（バーヒティカー）をもって御自身の三衣（ticīvara・てぃちーわら）をお仕立てになり、旧来の三衣は同梵行者（sabrahmacārī・さぼんぎょうしゃ）たちにお分かちになることができましょう。かくして私どもの浄施（ダッキナー）は、あたかも川の水があふれ出るように、広く行き渡ってゆくことでしょう。どうか、尊者よ、尊者アーナンダよ、この舶来の布をお受け取りください。」そうして尊者アーナンダは、翌朝、衣を整え……
