“It’s incredible, sir, it’s amazing! This imported cloth was sent to me by King Ajātasattu of Magadha, son of the princess of Videha, packed in a parasol case. It’s exactly sixteen measures long and eight wide. May Venerable Ānanda please accept it out of sympathy.” “Enough, great king. My three robes are complete.” How well this was said by Venerable Ānanda! I’m delighted and satisfied with what you’ve expressed so well. 「驚くべきことでございます、尊者よ、まことに希有なことでございます。この舶来の布は、マガダ国の王アジャータサットゥ（阿闍世）、ヴェーデーヒーの子より、傘の柄入れに納めて私のもとへ届けられたものでございます。長さはちょうど十六措（さく）、幅は八措ございます。どうか尊者アーナンダよ、慈悲をもってこれをお受け取りくださいますよう」「大王よ、それには及びません。私の三衣（さんえ）はすでに整っております」――なんと見事な御言葉でございましょうか、尊者よ、アーナンダ尊者の仰せは。私はこの善き言葉によって、心より喜び、満ち足りております。それほどまでに、尊者よ、アーナンダ尊者の善き言葉によって心は満たされております。もし、尊者よ、象宝（ぞうほう）があなたにふさわしいものであれば、私はそれをお贈りしたいとさえ思うほどに――
