彼は誠実さと真摯さをもってすれば到達できたものを、到達することができないでしょう。もし彼が怠惰であれば、精進（ヴィーリヤ）をもってすれば到達できたものを、到達することができないでしょう。もし彼が愚かであれば、智慧（パンニャー）をもってすれば到達できたものを、到達することができないでしょう。
王子よ、どうお思いになりますか。そのような者が、あなたのもとで象に乗り象鈎（アンクサ）を操る技を修得することができるでしょうか」
「尊者よ、そのような者は、五つの資質のうちただ一つでも欠けておれば、私のもとでその技を修得することはできません。五つすべてが欠けているとなれば、なおさらのことであります」
「今しも一人の者がやってきて、こう思ったとしましょう。『菩提（ボーディ）王子は象に乗り象鈎を操る技に通じておられる。
