「如来（にょらい）は故なくして微笑まれることはない」
大王よ、またある時、わたくしはかの毘婆陵伽（ヴェーバリンガ）という市邑（しゆう）のほとりに滞在しておりました。
「まことにわたくしは幸いなるかな、いかにも幸いなるかな。かの迦葉（カッサパ）世尊・応供・正等覚者が、このわたくしをかくまで深く信頼してくださっているとは」
大王よ、そのとき陶師（とうし）ガティーカーラ（Ghaṭīkāra）は、半月のあいだ喜悦（ピーティ）と安楽（スカ）を手放すことなく、またその両親もまた七日のあいだ同じく喜悦と安楽のうちにありました。
大王よ、そこでわたくしは、翌朝早く衣（ころも）を整え、鉢と衣をたずさえて、陶師ガティーカーラの両親のもとへと赴きました。赴きてそこに到り、かの両親にこう申しました。
「恐れながら、バッガヴァ（Bhaggava）はいずこへ参られましたか」
「尊者よ、あなたの信施者（しんせしゃ）は外へ出かけております。どうぞ——」
