Seyyathāpi, udāyi, dakkho kumbhakāro vā kumbhakārantevāsī vā suparikammakatāya mattikāya yaṁ yadeva bhājanavikatiṁ ākaṅkheyya taṁ tadeva kareyya abhinipphādeyya; seyyathā vā panudāyi, dakkho dantakāro vā dantakārantevāsī vā suparikammakatasmiṁ dantasmiṁ yaṁ yadeva dantavikatiṁ ākaṅkheyya taṁ tadeva kareyya abhinipphādeyya; seyyathā vā panudāyi, dakkho suvaṇṇakāro vā suvaṇṇakārantevāsī vā suparikammakatasmiṁ suvaṇṇasmiṁ yaṁ yadeva suvaṇṇavikatiṁ ākaṅkheyya taṁ tadeva kareyya abhinipphādeyya. Suppose a deft potter or their apprentice had some well-prepared clay. They could produce any kind of pot that they like. Or suppose a deft ivory-carver or their apprentice had some well-prepared ivory. They could produce any kind of ivory item that they like. Or suppose a deft goldsmith or their apprentice had some well-prepared gold. They could produce any kind of gold item that they like. たとえば、ウダーインよ、熟練した陶工（とうこう）、あるいはその弟子が、よく練り上げられた粘土を用いて、いかなる器（うつわ）の形をも望みのままに作り出し、仕上げることができるようなものである。あるいはまた、ウダーインよ、熟練した象牙細工師、あるいはその弟子が、よく調えられた象牙を用いて、いかなる象牙の細工をも望みのままに作り出し、仕上げることができるようなものである。あるいはまた、ウダーインよ、熟練した金細工師、あるいはその弟子が、よく精錬された黄金を用いて、いかなる黄金の細工をも望みのままに作り出し、仕上げることができるようなものである。それと同じく、わたしは弟子たちに対して、さまざまな種類の神通（じんつう）を自在に駆使するための修道（しゅうどう）の実践を説き示したのである。
