Then those mendicants went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him, “Sir, the mendicant Vacchagotta bows with his head to your feet and says: ‘I have served the Blessed One! I have served the Holy One!’” “I’ve already encompassed Vacchagotta’s mind and understood that he has the three knowledges, and is very mighty and powerful. そのとき、かの比丘たちは世尊のもとへと赴いた。赴いて、世尊を礼拝し、一方に坐した。一方に坐した彼ら比丘たちは、世尊にこのように申し上げた。
「尊者よ、ヴァッチャゴッタ（Vacchagotta）比丘が、世尊の御足に頭をもって礼拝し、またこのように申しております。『わたしは世尊（Bhagavā）に親しくお仕えいたしました。わたしは善逝（Sugata）に親しくお仕えいたしました』と。」
「比丘たちよ、わたしはすでに心をもってヴァッチャゴッタ比丘の心を遍知し（cetasā ceto paricca）、了解していた。『ヴァッチャゴッタ比丘は三明（tevijja）を具え、大いなる神通力と威力を有する者である』と。諸天もまたわたしにこのことを告げたのである。」
これが世尊の仰せられたことであった。
「わたしはゴータマ尊者（bhotā Gotamena）と、長きにわたって語らいを重ねてまいりました。どうか、わたしにお示しください――」
