このように語られると、居士（がじ）ウパーリは座より立ち上がり、上衣（ウッタラーサンガ）を片肌に整え、世尊のいます方へと合掌を向け、ニガンタ・ナータプッタにこう語りかけた。
世の誘惑（アーミサ）を吐き捨て、喜びに満ちておられる方、
人として沙門（サマナ）の務めを果たし遂げられた方、
最後の身体（アンティマ・サリーラ）を持つ人中の人、
比べるものなく、塵垢（ヴィラジャ）を離れた世尊——
その世尊の弟子こそ、この私に他ならぬ。
疑いを超え、善巧（クサラ）にして、よく調御する方、
最上の御者（サーラティ）にして、ならびなき方、
輝く法（ダンマ）を具え、迷いを断じ、
光明を放つ——その方の弟子こそ、この私である。
