在家の者よ、そなたはどのように思うか。聖者の律（りつ）において、あらゆる意味において、あらゆる点において、すべての取引が断ち切られるというが、そなた自身のうちに、そのような取引の断絶を見出すことができるか。」
「世尊よ、聖者の律において、あらゆる意味において、あらゆる点において、すべての取引を断ち切った方と、わたくしとを比べることができましょうか。わたくしは、そのような取引の断絶からはるかに遠いところにおります。世尊よ、かつてわたくしは、他の教えに従う遍歴行者（へんれきぎょうじゃ）たちを純血の駿馬（しゅんめ）のごとく思い、彼らに食を供し……」
