‘Reverends, I approached the Buddha to listen to the teaching. He explained Dhamma with its higher and higher stages, with its better and better stages, with its dark and bright sides. When I directly knew a certain principle of those teachings, in accordance with how I was taught, I came to a conclusion about the teachings. 「友よ、私はかの世尊のもとへ、法（ダンマ）を聴聞するために近づいた。世尊は私のために、段階を追ってより高く、より勝れた、明暗相対する法を説き示してくださった。友よ、世尊がこのように段階を追ってより高く、より勝れた、明暗相対する法を説き示してくださるにつれて、私はその法のなかの或る法を自ら証知（abhiññā）して、諸法について決定的な結論に至り、師に対する清信（pasāda）を得た——『世尊は正しく完全に覚られた方（sammāsambuddha）である。世尊によって法はよく説き示されている。僧伽（saṅgha）はよく実践している』と。」
比丘たちよ、いかなる人であれ、このような様相（ākāra）によって、このような言葉によって、このような表現によって、如来（tathāgata）に対する信（saddhā）が確立されたならば——
