And how does a mendicant not milk dry? It’s when a mendicant is invited by a householder to accept robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicines and supplies for the sick, and that mendicant knows moderation in accepting. That’s how a mendicant doesn’t milk dry. And how does a mendicant show extra respect to senior mendicants of long standing, long gone forth, fathers and leaders of the Saṅgha? 「では、比丘たちよ、いかにして比丘は搾り尽くさぬ者（sāvasesadohī）となるのか。ここに、比丘たちよ、信心ある在家の人々（gahapatikā）が、ある比丘に対し、衣（cīvara）・食（piṇḍapāta）・臥坐具（senāsana）・病者のための薬と資具（gilānappaccayabhesajjaparikkhāra）を持ち来たりて供養を申し出るとき、その比丘はこれを受け取るにあたって分量を知る。比丘たちよ、かくのごとく比丘は搾り尽くさぬ者となるのである。
また、比丘たちよ、いかにして比丘は、長老にして夜を知る者（rattaññū）、久しく出家し（cirapabbajita）、僧伽の父（saṅghapitaro）にして僧伽を導く者（saṅghapariṇāyakā）たる長老比丘たちに対し、格別の敬意をもって礼拝する者となるのか。ここに、比丘たちよ、ある比丘が、長老にして夜を知る者、久しく出家し、僧伽の父にして僧伽を導く者たる長老比丘たちに対して……」
