「比丘たちよ、あらゆる大河——すなわち、ガンジス河、ヤムナー河、アチラヴァティー河、サラブー河、マヒー河——は、みな東へと傾き、東へと向かい、東へと流れ下る。同じように、聖なる八正道を修習し培う比丘は、涅槃へと傾き、涅槃へと向かい、涅槃へと流れ下るのである。では、いかにして八正道を修習する比丘は、涅槃へと傾き、向かい、流れ下るのであるか。それは、比丘が正見、正思惟、正語、正業、正命、正精進、正念を修習するときである。」
