“Mendicants, tonight, several glorious deities, lighting up the entire Jeta’s Grove, came to me, bowed, stood to one side, and said to me: ‘Sir, formerly when we were human beings, renunciates came to our homes. We politely rose for them, but we didn’t bow. 比丘たちよ、今宵、幾柱かの光輝ある天神たちが、祇陀林全体を照らしながら私のもとへやって来て、礼拝し、一方に立って、こう申した。『尊師よ、かつて私どもが人間であったとき、沙門たちが我が家へ訪れて参りました。私どもは丁重に立ち上がって迎えましたが、礼拝はいたしませんでした。かくして、その務めを果たさなかったゆえに、悔恨と後悔に満ちたまま、より劣った世界へと生まれ変わってしまいました。』
