“Mendicants, there are these eight rebirths by giving. When their body breaks up, after death, they’re reborn in the company of well-to-do aristocrats or brahmins or householders. But I say that this is only for those of ethical conduct, not for the unethical. The heart’s wish of an ethical person succeeds because of their purity. What eight? First, someone gives to ascetics or brahmins such things as food, drink, clothing, vehicles; garlands, fragrance, and makeup; and bed, house, and lighting.
比丘たちよ、布施によって生ずる八つの再生がある。身体が滅し、死後において、彼らは富裕な刹帝利あるいは婆羅門、または長者の家に生まれ変わる。しかしながら、これは持戒の者にのみ当てはまることであり、破戒の者には当てはまらないと、私は説く。持戒の者の心からの願いは、その清浄さゆえに成就するのである。では、八つとは何か。第一に、ある者が沙門や婆羅門に対して、食物・飲み物・衣服・乗り物、花鬘・香料・塗香、そして臥具・住居・灯明といったものを施す。
