かくの如く我は聞けり。ある時、尊者舎利弗と尊者大目犍連は、多くの比丘衆を伴い、南山の地を遊行しておられた。その折、ヴェールカンタキーという優婆夷、すなわちナンダの母は、夜明けの薄明の頃に起き出で、「彼岸道品」の偈を誦していた。「尊者よ、これのみが私の不思議にして稀有なる功徳ではございません。他にもまた一つございます。私がいまだ若く、夫のもとへ嫁いで参りました時より、心においてさえ夫を裏切ったことは一度もございません。まして身をもって犯すようなことは——」
