So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying near Vesālī, at the Sārandada Shrine. Then several Licchavis went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and the Buddha said to these Licchavis: “Licchavis, I will teach you these seven principles that prevent decline. かくの如く、我れは聞けり。ある時、世尊はヴェーサーリーの近く、サーランダダ霊廟に滞在しておられた。その時、数人のリッチャヴィ族の者たちが世尊のもとへ参り、礼拝して傍らに座した。すると世尊はこれらのリッチャヴィ族の者たちに告げられた。「リッチャヴィの方々よ、我れはそなたたちに、衰退を防ぐ七つの法を説くであろう。よく聴き、心して受け止めるがよい。我れは今、説かんとす。」「はい、世尊よ」と彼らは答えた。世尊はこのように仰せられた。「では、衰退を防ぐ七つの法とは何か。ヴァッジ族の者たちが、頻繁に集い、多くの会合を持ち続ける限りにおいては――」
