At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Sakyans near the little village of Sāma, by a lotus pond. Then, late at night, a glorious deity, lighting up the entire lotus pond, went up to the Buddha, bowed, stood to one side, and said to him, “Sir, three qualities lead to the decline of a mendicant. What three? Relishing work, talk, and sleep. These three qualities lead to the decline of a mendicant.” That’s what that deity said, and the teacher approved. Then that deity, knowing that t
或る時、世尊はサーキャ族の国、サーマという小さな村の近く、蓮池のほとりに滞在しておられた。やがて夜も更けた頃、蓮池全体を光り輝かせながら、一柱の尊き天神が世尊のもとへと近づき、礼拝して傍らに立ち、こう申し上げた。
「尊師よ、三つの法は比丘の衰退をもたらします。いかなる三つかと申せば、作務を楽しむこと、談論を楽しむこと、睡眠を楽しむこと、これらにございます。この三つの法が、比丘の衰退をもたらすのでございます。」
かの天神はこのように申し上げ、師たる世尊はこれを嘉納された。そこでかの天神は、師がその言葉を認められたことを知り……
