“Mendicants, a mendicant with five qualities is placed in hell as if delivered there. What five? It’s when a mendicant is faithless, shameless, imprudent, lazy, and witless. A mendicant with these five qualities is placed in hell as if delivered there. A mendicant with five qualities is placed in heaven as if delivered there. What five? It’s when a mendicant is faithful, conscientious, prudent, energetic, and wise. A mendicant with these five qualities is placed in heaven as if delivered there.”
「比丘たちよ、五つの性質を備えた比丘は、まるで運ばれるかのごとく地獄に置かれる。その五つとは何か。すなわち、信なく、慚なく、愧なく、懈怠にして、慧なき比丘である。これら五つの性質を備えた比丘は、まるで運ばれるかのごとく地獄に置かれる。五つの性質を備えた比丘は、まるで運ばれるかのごとく天界に置かれる。その五つとは何か。すなわち、信あり、慚あり、愧あり、精進にして、慧ある比丘である。これら五つの性質を備えた比丘は、まるで運ばれるかのごとく天界に置かれる。」
