“Mendicants, there are these four kinds of mice. One makes a hole but doesn’t live in it, one lives in a hole but doesn’t make it, one neither makes a hole nor lives in it, and one both makes a hole and lives in it. What four? One makes a hole but doesn’t live in it, one lives in a hole but doesn’t make it, one neither makes a hole nor lives in it, and one both makes a hole and lives in it. These are the four kinds of mice. In the same way, these four individuals similar to mice are found in the
比丘たちよ、世に四種のネズミがおる。穴を掘りながらも其処に住まぬもの、穴に住みながらも自ら掘らぬもの、穴を掘らず住まぬもの、穴を掘り且つ其処に住むもの、この四つである。いかなる四つか。穴を掘りながらも其処に住まぬもの、穴に住みながらも自ら掘らぬもの、穴を掘らず住まぬもの、穴を掘り且つ其処に住むもの、これが四種のネズミである。同じく、世にはこのネズミに喩うべき四種の人が見出されるのである。
