At Sāvatthī. Now at that time there was a brahmin named Saṅgārava staying in Sāvatthī. He practiced purification by water, believing in purification by water. He lived committed to the practice of immersing himself in water at daybreak and dusk. Then Venerable Ānanda robed up in the morning and, taking his bowl and robe, entered Sāvatthī for alms. He wandered for alms in Sāvatthī. After the meal, on his return from almsround, he went to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him, “
舎衛城にての事なり。その頃、舎衛城にサンガーラヴァという名のバラモンが滞在しておられた。彼は水による清浄を信じ、水による浄化の行を修めていた。夜明けと夕暮れに水に身を沈める修行に専ら励み、その実践に身を捧げていた。
さて、尊者アーナンダは朝早く衣を整え、鉢と衣を携えて、托鉢のために舎衛城へと入られた。舎衛城において托鉢を行じ、食事を終えて托鉢より戻られた後、世尊のもとへと赴き、礼拝して一方に座し、世尊にこのように申し上げた。「
