So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Sakyans, in the Great Wood near Kapilavatthu, together with a large Saṅgha of five hundred mendicants, all of whom were perfected ones. And most of the deities from ten solar systems had gathered to see the Buddha and the Saṅgha of mendicants. Then four deities of the Pure Abodes, aware of what was happening, thought: “Why don’t we go to the Buddha and each recite a verse in his presence?” Then, as easily as a strong person w
このように私は聞いた。ある時、世尊は釈迦族の地、カピラヴァットゥ近くの大林において、五百人の比丘よりなる大きな僧伽とともに滞在しておられた。その比丘たちはことごとく阿羅漢の境地に達した方々であった。また、十の太陽系にわたる諸天の大多数が、世尊と比丘僧伽を拝するために集い来たっていた。
その時、浄居天の四柱の天神たちは、この様子を知るや、かく思った。「我らも世尊のもとに参り、御前においてそれぞれ一偈を誦してはいかがであろうか」と。そして、力強き者が曲げた腕を伸ばし、あるいは伸ばした腕を曲げるほどの、まさにその刹那のうちに――
