If the restroom is dirty, he should sweep it. If there’s no water for drinking, he should get some. If there’s no water for washing, he should get some. If there’s no water in the restroom ablutions pot, he should fill it. This is the proper conduct for newly-arrived monks.” 2. Discussion of the proper conduct for resident monks At that time, when they saw newly-arrived monks, the resident monks did not prepare seats, or put out foot stools, foot scrapers, or water for washing the feet. They did not go out to meet them to receive their bowls and robes, or ask if they wanted water to drink. They did not bow down to newly-arrived monks who were senior to them or assign dwellings to them. The monks of few desires complained and criticized them, “How can the resident monks act like this?” They told the Buddha. Soon afterwards he had the Sangha gathered and questioned the monks:
