They tell you secrets. They keep your secrets. They don’t abandon you in times of trouble. They’d even give their life for your welfare. 友は汝の秘密を打ち明け、また汝の秘密を守る。苦難のときにも見捨てず、汝の幸福のためには命すら惜しまない。居士の子よ、この四つのことがらによって、善き心をもつ友——苦楽をともにする友——を見知るべきである。
居士の子よ、四つのことがらによって、善き心をもつ友——利益を示す友（アッタッカーイー）——を見知るべきである。友は汝が悪をなすことを遠ざけ、善をなすことへと導く。いまだ聞かざることを聞かせ、天界への道（サッガッサ・マッガ）を示す。居士の子よ、この四つのことがらによって、善き心をもつ友——利益を示す友——を見知るべきである。
