They’re hospitable in the past. They’re hospitable in the future. They’re full of meaningless pleasantries. When something needs doing in the present they point to their own misfortune. You can recognize a fake friend who’s all talk on these four grounds. You can recognize a fake friend who’s a flatterer on four grounds. They support you equally in doing bad and doing good. 過去のことを持ち出しては厚意を示し、未来のことを持ち出しては厚意を示し、中身のない愛想言葉で取り入り、現在なすべきことがあれば、自らの不幸を楯にとる。長男よ、この四つのことがらによって、口先だけの友（vacīparamo）は、友に似て友ならぬ者と知るべきである。
長男よ、阿諛追従する者（anuppiyabhāṇī）は、四つのことがらによって、友に似て友ならぬ者と知るべきである。悪事をなすにも同意を与え、善事をなすにも同意を与え、面前ではその人を褒め称え、陰に回ってはその人を貶める。長男よ、この四つのことがらによって、阿諛追従する者は、友に似て友ならぬ者と知るべきである。
