The Realized One does as he says, and says as he does. Since this is so, that’s why he’s called the ‘Realized One’. 如来（にょらい）は語るがごとく行じ、行ずるがごとく語る。かくのごとくであるがゆえに、「如来」と呼ばれるのである。チュンダよ、神々・悪魔（マーラ）・梵天（ぼんてん）を含むこの世界において、沙門・婆羅門（ばらもん）・神々・人間を含むこの民のなかにあって、如来は征服者（あびびゅう）にして、いかなるものにも征服されることなく、あまねく見通す者、自在に力を振るう者である。かくのごとくであるがゆえに、「如来」と呼ばれるのである。
さて、長老アーナンダと沙弥（しゃみ）チュンダは、世尊のもとへと赴いた。世尊のもとに至り、世尊を礼拝して、一方の側に座した。一方の側に座した長老アーナンダは、世尊にこのように申し上げた。
