And here’s another way to understand how principle is the best thing for people in both this life and the next. the ascetic Gotama has gone forth from the neighboring clan of the Sakyans. And the Sakyans are his vassals. The Sakyans show deference to King Pasenadi by bowing down, rising up, greeting him with joined palms, and observing proper etiquette for him. さらに、ヴァーセッタよ、次のことからも、法（ダンマ）こそが、現世においても来世においても、人々にとって最上のものであることを知るべきである。
「沙門ゴータマは、釈迦族（サキャ）の一門より出家された方である」と。ところで、ヴァーセッタよ、釈迦族はコーサラ国のパセーナディ王に臣従する者たちである。釈迦族の人々は、コーサラ王パセーナディに対して、ひれ伏し、礼拝し、起立し、合掌し、礼儀を尽くした振る舞いをする。さて、ヴァーセッタよ、釈迦族の人々がコーサラ王パセーナディに対してなすところの、そのひれ伏し、礼拝し、起立し、合掌し、礼儀を尽くした振る舞いを、パセーナディ王もまた、如来（タターガタ）に対してなすのである。しかしながら、パセーナディ王はこのように思うのではない――「沙門ゴータマは高貴な生まれであり、自分はそうではない」などと。
