「比丘たちよ、ここに一人の比丘がいる。彼は諸々の煩悩（āsava）を滅し尽くすことによって、煩悩なき心解脱（cetovimuttī）と慧解脱（paññāvimuttī）を、まさにこの現世において、みずから神通智（abhiññā）をもって証知し、実現して、住するのである。比丘たちよ、これが比丘の力（bala）である。
比丘たちよ、わたしはこれほどまでに打ち克ちがたき力を、他に一つとして見出すことができない。すなわち、それは悪魔の力（mārabala）である。
比丘たちよ、善なる法（kusala dhamma）を受持することによってこそ、かくのごとく福徳（puññā）は増大するのである。」
さて、比丘たちよ、比丘にとっての長命（āyu）とはいかなるものか——
これが世尊の説かれたことである。心に喜びを得た比丘たちは、世尊の御言葉を歓んで受け入れた。
