「では、尊者よ、苦行（タポ）と罪悪を厭離（ジグッチャー）する実践は、いかなる状態においてこそ完成し、またいかなる状態においては未完成となるのでしょうか」
こう問われると、かの遊行者（パリッバージャカ）たちはいっせいに喚声をあげ、大きな叫び声をもって口々に言った。「これは不思議なことではないか、これはまことに希有なことではないか。沙門ゴータマの神力（イッダ）と威徳（アヌバーヴァ）のいかに大いなることよ。みずからの教説をしばらく措いて、他者の教説についての論議をこそ促されるとは」
そこでニグローダ遊行者は世尊にこのように申し上げた。「どうか、尊者よ、世尊よ、おいでください。ようこそおいでくださいました。久しぶりに世尊はここへお越しになる機会を設けてくださいました。どうか、尊者よ、世尊よ、ここにおかけください」
