Let your tutor remain your tutor. You might think, ‘The ascetic Gotama speaks like this because he wants us to give up our recitation.’ But you should not see it like this. Let your recitation remain as it is. You might think, When this was said, those wanderers sat silent, dismayed, shoulders drooping, downcast, depressed, with nothing to say, as if their minds were possessed by Māra. 「汝らの師は、そのまま汝らの師であってよい。あるいは汝、ニグローダよ、こう思うかもしれない——『沙門ゴータマは、我らに誦習（うどでさ）を捨てさせようとして、かくのごとく説くのであろう』と。しかし、ニグローダよ、そのように見てはならない。汝らの誦習は、そのまま汝らの誦習であってよい。あるいは汝はまた、こう思うかもしれない——」
かくのごとく説かれたとき、彼ら遍歴行者たちは沈黙し、うなだれ、肩を落とし、俯き、意気沮喪して、言葉もなく、まるでその心が悪魔（マーラ）に憑かれたかのように坐していた。
そのとき、世尊にこのような思いが起こった——「この者たちはことごとく、愚かなる者どもである。すでに悪しき者（パーピマント）の手に触れられてしまっている。そもそも、一人たりとも——」
