Let those things that are unskillful and considered unskillful in your tradition remain as they are. You might think, ‘The ascetic Gotama speaks like this because he wants us to stop doing things that are skillful and considered skillful in our tradition.’ But you should not see it like this. ‘The ascetic Gotama speaks like this because he wants pupils.’ Let those things that are skillful and considered skillful in your tradition remain as they are. 「ニグローダよ、汝らの法（ダンマ）のうち、不善（あくぜん）にして、師伝の教えにおいても不善と見なされるものは、そのままにしておくがよい。されど、汝はこのように思うかもしれぬ。『われらの法のうち、善（ぜん）にして、師伝の教えにおいても善と見なされるものより、われらを離れしめんがために、沙門ゴータマはかく語るのであろう』と。しかし、ニグローダよ、そのように見てはならぬ。また、汝はこのように思うかもしれぬ。『沙門ゴータマは弟子を得んがために、かく語るのであろう』と。汝らの法のうち、善にして、師伝の教えにおいても善と見なされるものは、そのままにしておくがよい。ニグローダよ、われは弟子を求めんがためにかく語るのでもなく、汝らに教説（うでさ）を捨てしめんがためにかく語るのでもなく、汝らの生活の資（よすが）を奪わんがためにかく語るのでもなく、また汝らの法のうち不善なるものを……」
